Sedan Completes Safe Routes to School Plan

The City of Sedan completes its 2025 Safe Routes to School plan.

The Safe Routes to School program comes through the Kansas Department of Transportation with the purpose of promoting walking, biking, and rolling to school with the goal to improve student health and safety. Over the past 50 years, the number of students who walk or bike to school has fallen from 50% to just 15%. The Safe Routes program is part of a statewide effort to reverse that trend.

Sedan was awarded a Safe Routes grant in July 2024 to identify problem areas in the city and to develop a solution to those issues. While there have been no major safety incidents involving Sedan students in the past five years, one major area of concern the City found was a lack of proper sidewalks. Changes have been designed to help solve that problem. The City has also embarked on a safety and education campaign as well as changing school pick-up and drop-off procedures to improve student safety.

By completing the SRTS plan, the City may now be eligible to receive implementation grants to help cover the costs of making those changes. A similar plan was completed in Coffeyville in 2017.
