The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a stream advisory for Cow Creek near the City of Pittsburg and US-160 to the Oklahoma State line.
The advisory was issued due to insufficient treatment of water at the Pittsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant due to operational issues. As a result, there may be elevated levels of E. coli bacteria in the creek. The City of Pittsburg is aware of the problem and is taking steps to address the issue.
Residents are advised to stay away from the stream and those who live or have activities nearby, should not enter the stream or allow children or pets to enter the water.
The advisory will remain in effect until the water is deemed safe by K-D-H-E.
