Independence Celebrates Constitution Week

The City of Independence is marking Constitution Week.

The annual celebration commemorates the signing of the U.S. constitution on September 17, 1787. Congress officially adopted the occasion in 1956 at the request of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The local chapter of the D-A-R requested an official proclamation from the City of Independence. At the most recent City commission meeting, Commissioner Dean Hayse makes the official motion.

The celebration includes today, September 17th, as Constitution Day to recognize the signing of the Constitution by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention. The week emphasizes the enduring nature of the Constitution as a bulwark against the abuse of power and a framework for a thriving democracy.
