Mil Increase and Grocery Store Ownership on Caney Council Agenda

Three big items are on the agenda for tomorrow's Caney City Council meeting, including the potential sale of Caney Grocery.

A budget hearing will be held during the meeting concerning the 2026 budget and the mil increase from 46.784 to 56 mils for a total projected budget of close to $6.95 million.

Caney City Administrator Andrea Sibley says a mil levy increase is unfortunately needed for this budget cycle.

The proposed budget for Caney Grocery for 2026 is $1.25 million, but if the sale of the store is approved tomorrow night to Hans Retail Caney LLC based in Pittsburg, Kansas, Mayor Josh Elliott says the budget could be amended and the mil levy increase may be able to be decreased.

Also on the agenda, a submission from the city of Caney to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for a low-interest loan of just over $2 million will be up for discussion and a public hearing.  The loan would be used to continue the water connection to the city of Coffeyville through the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 at Caney City Hall's East Entrance at 100 East 4th Street. The meeting will also be avialble to view on the KGGF KQQF KUSN Facebook page.
