KS AG Files Suit against Governor

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach files a lawsuit against Governor Laura Kelly to force the state to disclose information about SNAP recipients to the federal government.

The motion was filed Monday in Shawnee County District Court. The U.S. Department of Agriculture requested the information including name, Social Security number, date of birth, and address of Kansas residents who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. A week later, the Director of the Kansas Department of Children and Families denied the request.

Kobach says he filed the suit because Kelly is violating both federal and state laws that require her to provide the information.

Kelly issued a statement yesterday, saying that that AG Kobach is engaging in political theater and that her adminstration is firm in working to protect the privacy rights of Kansans.
