Parsons City Commission Votes to Exceed Revenue Neutral Rate

The Parsons City Commission hears from citizens regarding raising the city’s mill levy for 2026.

At the most recent city commission meeting, there was a public hearing to allow comment on exceeding the revenue neutral rate. The measure would increase Parson’s city mill levy from 57.139 to 62.140. Many Parsons residents attended the meeting to make comments on the tax rate. Several expressed frustration over the effects of high taxes on current residents as well as effecting the likelihood of bringing new residents to the area. Many simply asked where their money was going.

While some comments grew heated at times, the public hearing settled into a frank conversation between citizens and commissioners regarding tax money and rising costs for the city. Commissioner Leland Crooks says he was pleased to see so many concerned citizens and asked them to attend more meetings in the future.

The commission voted unanimously to exceed the revenue neutral rate, noting that the mill levy might not increase to the new level during the budget process.
