The Arkansas State Police are called in to investigate the death of an inmate that occurred while he was in the costudy of Fort Smith police.

Authorities say that 41-year-old Cody Burns of Fort Smith died Wednesday while in custody. Burns had been placed under arrest in connection to reports of a stolen car crashing into a church. Burns was the alleged driver of the car and was dtained by church staff following the accident. He was placed in the backseat of a police cruiser and taken to the Fort Smith detention center. Upon arrival, Burns was unresponsive in the backseat. Officer attempted life-saving measures and transported him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
