The Altamont City Council approves the 2026 budget.
At the council's most recent meeting, members voted to approve the budget for the upcoming year. One Altamont citizen was at the meeting. The woman asks why taxes in the city are going to increase when not much progress has been made on issues like street repair.
City Administrator LeeAnn Myers stated that the mill levy will see a slight increase. At the previous council meeting, members adjusted the budget to raise the mill by 1.25. Myers says this is an improvement over the original increase of 8.66 mills.
The council approved the budget unanimously. In other business, Myers updated the council on the ongoing sewer project. She reported that the city was working on a grant for the lift station and line replacement that would lower the amount the city would need to borrow from the State Revolving Fund if the grant is awarded.
Police Chief Michael Shields also reported on A-P-D's recent activities, including several speeding citations issued within the city and also a stop for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He also announced the 1st Annual Guns and Hoses, Police versus Fire Department Chilli cookoff fundraiser to be held on October 18th.
