A police officer with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department is killed in the line of duty.
26-year-old Officer Hunter Simoncic was killed early Tuesday morning while deploying stop sticks in response to a fleeing suspect. Authorities say the suspect drove toward Simoncic, struck him with his vehicle, then continued to flee. Simoncic was taken to KU Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Police have arrested 31-year-old Dennis Mitchell the 3rd of Kansas City. He has been booked into the Wyandotte County Jail on multiple charges, including suspicion of first-degree murder and vehicular homicide.
Simoncic was a native of Galesburg in Neosho County and a graduate of Pittsburg State University. He is survived by his mother, father, and brother.
