KDHE Announces End of Measles Outbreak in Southwest Kansas

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says the measles outbreak in southwest Kansas is officially over.

KDHE officials say two full incubation periods or 42 days, have passed since the last confirmed case was reported. The outbreak was first reported in March of this year with a total of 90 confirmed cases of the illness. KDHE says 89% of those cases occurred in children and more than 90% of those who contracted the illness were not vaccinated. A total of eight people were hospitalized over the course of the outbreak.

Since there is not an active outbreak in southwest Kansas, KDHE is no longer recommending the early measles, mumps and rubella vaccination dose for infants 6-11 months old. As the new school year begins, officials are urging parents to make sure their children are protected by ensuring their families are up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations.
