Crews at Work to Repair Spillway Gate on NW Arkansas Dam

Crews from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are at work in northwest Arkansas after a gate on a dam over the Arkansas River gets stuck open.

Officials say the gate at the Dardanelle Lock and Dam got stuck in the open position during routine maintenance on Tuesday morning. When workers tried to lower the gate, it would not move, and it has remained in the open position since that time. While crews from the Corps of Engineers continue efforts to close the gate, they are also working with the Southwestern Power Administration to manage flows with hydropower generators to ensure an adequate water supply for Arkansas Nuclear One near Russellville.

A spokesperson for the Corps of Engineers says public safety is their top priority. Navigation on the Arkansas River was temporarily closed while the repair effort is ongoing, but access will resume when repairs are complete.
