The City of Independence is marking today as National Senior Citizens Day.
The day is set aside to honor and appreciate the contributions of older citizens. Mayor Scott Smith made the proclamation at the most recent Independence City commission meeting.
National Senior Citizens Day was established in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. Independence Diversity Task Force Representative Kathy Shepard says the day recognizes the unique contributions made by older Americans.
National Senior Citizens Day helps create a more inclusive and supportive society for all ages.
