USD 446 to Meet With City Tonight To Discuss Central Park Sports Complex

Representatives from USD 446 and the City of Independence will meet tonight in a special work session to discuss the school district's use of the baseball and softball fields at the Central Park Sports Complex.

At issue is a use agreement between the District and the City that would allow baseball and softball teams from Independence High School and Middle School to use the city-owned fields. The City has proposed a 15-year agreement that would charge USD 446 $70,000 a year and give the district priority use. The funds would help the City cover costs of maintenance and upkeep of the facility, and the agreement is similar to the USD 446-ICC agreement over the use of Shulthis Stadium.

The City is also offering to lower the yearly fee to $40,000 for the first ten years of the agreement in exchange for 33 acres of unplatted land near Jefferson School and another 22 acres of land outside the city limits.

Tonight's meeting begins at 6pm in the Civic Center at Memorial Hall.
