Replacing aging infrastructure and covering the costs of the grocery store are reasons why the Caney City Council is looking to raise the mil levy for the 2026 fiscal year.
In a budget workshop held after last night's regular session meeting, city officials and council members discussed raising the mil rate from its current rate of 46.784 to 56 mils. One mil in the city of Caney is equal to around $12,000.
Officials say all avenues of grant funding are still being pursued to help the cost for the water connection to Coffeyville, as well as replacing water pipes, transitioning to digital water meters and adding a new water storage facility.
Officials add that negotiations continue for the sale of the grocery store, and the budget can be amended when the store changes to a privately owned business.
Actions taken during the regular session included approval of ordinances for future RV parks, furthering the condemnation process for a property in the 200 block of North State Street, and the approval of a Business License for Body Builder Wrecking Service, to be located on Highway 75.
The next regular session meeting and budget hearing will take place Monday, September 15, 2025, at 6:30 PM at Caney City Hall.
