A new walking trail along the Verdigris River in Independence will soon have new signs marking the way.
The Independence City Commission approved the signage for the Verdigris Vista Walking Trail. Part of the trail passes under the railroad trestle near the Central Park Sports Complex on Park Boulevard. City Finance Director Lacey Lies says the city also needs to request permission for land use from the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad to legally access the path.
Project leader Brittney Holum says the trail follows part of the historic Inter-urban Route.
The rest of the trail leads south past the City Water Plant along the banks of the River. To learn more about walking trails in Independence, visit the website indytrails.org.
