Montgomery County Commission Considers Rules for County Cemeteries

Montgomery County is considering the adoption of a set of rules and regulations for county-owned cemeteries.

These cemeteries include LeHunt, Poor Farm, Quaker, and Highland. County Administrator Jonathan Booe told the commission at this week's meeting that the proposed set of rules is ready for a vote pending approval by the county's legal advisors. Booe says the rules need clarification because cemeteries can be a sensitive issue.

Commissioners agreed that the rules were needed but suggested some additions to the proposal, including issues of fenced monuments, the number of cremation remains allowed per plot, and ground settling around monuments and plots. Booe says while these are old cemeteries, something needs to be done because, currently, there are no rules.

In other business, commissioners hear the quarterly report from Register of Deeds Marilyn Calhoun, plus a discussion of adopting a new compensation scale for county employees.
