Routine Water System Maintenance Underway in Fredonia

The City of Fredonia is undergoing a routine water system maintenance procedure during the month of August.

The City’s water supplier, Public Wholesale Water Supply District #23, is conducting its annual free chlorine conversion/burn process. The process began on Friday and will continue through the month. A free chlorine conversion or chlorine burn is a temporary switch in a city's water disinfection process from chloramines -- a combination of chlorine and ammonia -- to free chlorine, which is chlorine only. The conversion helps eliminate bacteria that can thrive in the water distribution system, especially those that feed on ammonia.

During this time, residents may notice a stronger chlorinated smell or taste in tap water. Please be assured that this is a normal and temporary part of the process, and the water remains completely safe for all uses and consumption. Those with questions may contact City Hall at (620) 378-2231 or the City of Fredonia Water Department at (620) 378-3161.
