A 9-1-1 call placed from a grandmother in Derby on Wednesday night ends in tragedy.
Authorities say 49-year-old Sharmaine Burke made the emergency call around 11:30pm on Wednesday, stating that her son-in-law was drunk and threatening to shoot her in the head. Burke identified her son-in-law as 29-year-old Stephen Rogers. She also told 9-1-1 dispatchers that Rogers' 8-year-old son was also in the home.
Dispatchers then heard three gunshots. Deputies arrived on the scene to find Burke deceased and alone in the home. A traffic stop east of Wichita soon after located the suspect and the child.
The boy has been placed in protective custody. Burke had been acting as the boy's caregiver after his mother passed away last year.
Rogers was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
