City crews in Independence work to pick up brush in the city.
According to City Engineer John Garris, the Independence Street Department averages about one thousand brush pick-ups every year. However, Garris says they've already reached that number for 2025.
City Commissioner Tim Emert says the City needs to do a better job of informing residents about the process for having their brush piles taken care of.
Independence residents who have brush to pick up must contact the city to make arrangements. Brush must be placed near the curb and at least 4 feet away from any utility meter, cover, pole, or guy wire. Brush should be stacked neatly and compactly with all branches facing the same direction. If the brush pile contains lumber or trash, city crews will not take it.
