The Coffeyville Fire Department Hazmat team responds to Independence for a spill at the FedEx warehouse.
At around 8:00am this morning, the Independence Fire Department responded to a hazardous materials incident at the FedEx warehouse. Upon arrival, units found a 2’ x 2’ package leaking and off-gassing an unknown substance. Out of caution and prior to the chemical being identified, CFD’s Hazardous Materials Team was requested for assistance.
Coffeyville Hazmat responded and identified the chemical as nitric acid. The team isolated the spill and neutralized the acid, converting it into a non-hazardous base. FedEx has contracted a private environmental cleanup company to complete the decontamination and disposal process. No injuries were reported.
