One Killed, Three Injured in Douglas County Crash

One person is dead and three others are injured following a weekend car accident in Douglas County.

The accident occurred around 12:45 on Friday afternoon on US-40 near Lawrence. A 2012 Ford Focus driven by 29-year-old Zachary Odom of Tecumseh, Kansas, was traveling in the westbound lanes of US-40 when the vehicle veered into the oncoming eastbound lanes. 54-year-old Kieron Nicholson of Memphis, Tennessee, was driving in the eastbound lane and attempted to avoid a collision with Odom’s vehicle by driving into the ditch. However, his car was struck on the rear driver’s side. Nicholson received minor injuries.

Odom’s car continued driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes where it collided head-on with a Ford pickup truck. The driver of the truck, 51-year-old Leonard Schupp of Oskaloosa, Kansas, died at the scene. A 15-year-old female passenger in the truck suffered serious injuries. Odom was also seriously injured in the crash.
