Fort Scott is awarded a Safe Routes to School Planning and Programming grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
The grant will allow the community to create a plan that will analyze existing conditions, examine public outreach, and recommend solutions to help more children in Fort Scott walk, bike, and roll to school. The final plans are due to the state in May 2026 and will make the community eligible for construction and implementation grants through KDOT's Transportation Alternatives Program.
The City of Sedan in Chautauqua County received the same grant last year. Safe Routes to School is a comprehensive program aimed at getting more kids walking and biking to school.
