The Independence City Commission will meet tonight and discuss adopting a new ordinance to address the collection of delinquent accounts to the City.
The City of Independence occasionally encounters delinquent accounts, including unpaid utility bills, municipal court fines, abatement costs, and various assessments. While current processes allow for internal follow-up, the City feels there is a need for stronger tools to enhance the recovery of outstanding debts. The ordinance up for consideration tonight would allow the City to engage third-party debt collection services or legal counsel to assist in recovering debts.
Commissioners will also consider applying for a grant to cover the costs of installing an electric vehicle charging station in the Municipal Parking Lot. There will also be a discussion of a resolution for procedures for handling any civil rights or fair housing complaints in the City.
Tonight's meeting will begin at 5:30 in the Commission Room at City Hall and is open to the public. The meeting can also be viewed online via the City's website.
