Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate that occurred this weekend at the Wyandotte County Detention Center.
50-year-old Charles Adair of Kansas City, KS, died on Saturday evening at the Kansas City facility. Adair had been treated in the detention center's infirmary for a pre-existing wound on his leg around 8:30pm. Sheriff's deputies say Adair caused a disturbance when they attempted to return him to his cell and was placed in handcuffs. The inmate was eventually returned to his cell and the cuffs were removed. About ten minutes later, medical staff was called to Adair's cell and found him unresponsive. Life-saving measures were taken and EMS was called. Adair was pronounced deceased at 9:20pm.
The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office notified the Kansas Bureau of Investigation of the death. By statute, the KBI investigates all in-custody deaths which occur in Kansas jails and prisons. KBI agents on the scene did not observe any obvious signs of injury to Adair the may have resulted from the incident. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Adair had been in the facility since he was arrested July 4, on misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear on multiple traffic violations.
The investigation is ongoing.
