City of Independence Readies for Flood Preparedness

The recent deadly floods in Texas remind residents that flooding can happen suddenly and can have terrible consequences.

The City of Independence is asking residents to help build a stronger, more resilient community by doing their part to help reduce the risk of flooding. The City is participating in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Rating System. The program focuses on proactive efforts such as flood mitigation, public outreach, and preparedness, and will help lower flood insurance premiums for residents. The City of Independence is emphasizing five essential preparedness steps during the month of July. Those steps include understanding the risk of flooding for your property, purchasing flood insurance, preparing an emergency kit, creating a family flood plan, and taking steps to prepare your home in case of flooding.

For local information on the flood zones and hazards, contact the floodplain manager at 620.332.2528 or davidc@independenceks.gov , FEMA’s Flood Insurance Rate Maps are available at https://www.fema.gov/flood-maps
