A turtle in the road leads to a one-vehicle accident in Cherokee County.
Just before 7:00 Saturday night, reports of a crash came in to 911 near the intersection of NW 80th and Scammon Road.
Officials say the female driver swerved to miss a turtle as her Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Scammon Road. Her vehicle went off the left side of the road, overturning upside down in a corn field.
The driver and her two puppies in the vehicle were not injured, and the turtle was also unharmed.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reminds drivers not to swerve to miss animals in the roadway, because swerving could lead to bigger events like losing control of your vehicle, leaving the road, or accidents with oncoming traffic. They suggest to slow down as much as possible and keep your vehicle from swerving from the middle of your lane. KHP says it is safer to hit an animal than to swerve and cause more danger.
West Mineral Fire, Cherokee County Deputies and EMS responded to the accident.
