BBB Warns of New Technology Used to Scam

Scammers are upgrading their old techniques with new real-sounding technology.

The Better Business Bureau warns consumers to watch out for a newer type of rouse... “emergency scams”. These scams include phone calls, voice mails, and voice messages that sound like a friend or family member in distress. The use of AI aides scammers to clone voices with just a few seconds of audio, from a social media post or a voicemail greeting.

The BBB says warning signs you can listen for include unusual pauses, a voice that sounds a little “too” robotic, or words or phrases said that the person you know wouldn’t normally use.

The BBB says it’s always important to just stop and verify. Hang up the phone, call the person back, or another family member who can verify where that person is. The BBB also suggests using a secret word for friends and family to verify their identity over a call and hang up if that word is not said.
