State of Oklahoma Will Not Seek Death Penalty Against Richard Glossip

The State of Oklahoma announces it will not seek the death penalty against Richard Glossip in a 1997 murder-for-hire case.

Glossip was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of Oklahoma City motel owner Barry Van Treese. In 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court granted Glossip's request for a new trial, citing concerns about due process and newly uncovered evidence that had not been presented at the original trial.

State prosecutors have announced that they plan to move forward with a new trial for Glossip, but will no longer seek the death penalty should he be convicted.

A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday to determine whether Glossip will remain in state custody as he awaits his new trial.
