A Coffeyville city commissioner resigns after comments made on social media concerning a recent post on Facebook.
Commissioner Don Edwards submitted his resignation to the Coffeyville City Commission and to City Attorney Paul Kritz this morning, saying his comments are distracting from the many positive things happening in Coffeyville. In addition to his resignation, Edwards also stated he will be contacting the Montgomery County clerk to remove his name from the November ballots, in which he was seeking reelection in November for the seat he currently has held.
Coffeyville Mayor Deborah Maples issued a statement after the post by Edwards, saying the commission strives to create a respective, inclusive environment safe for all, especially children. She also stated that city commissioners and staff strive to hold themselves to higher standards because of those they serve.
Edwards says he loves the City of Coffeyville and wants nothing but the best for the town.
The Coffeyville commission will now look to appoint someone to fill the remainder of Edwards' term.
***Below is the letter submitted to the commission and to City Attorney Kritz***
Dear Mayor,
I want to again apologize for the unacceptable comment posted on my Facebook page last week. The comment in question has caused a lot of upset in our community and is distracting from the many positive things happening at the City of Coffeyville.
Please accept my resignation from the Coffeyville City Commission effective immediately. I will also be reaching out to the County Clerk to inquire about removing my name from the November ballot.
I have nothing but love in my heart for my hometown of Coffeyville and want nothing but the best for our City.
-Don Edwards
