Miss Able Celebration Set for Saturday in Independence

Independence will be having a blast on Saturday as the city celebrates the 66th anniversary of Miss Able's historic space flight at Riverside Park.

Miss Able was a female rhesus monkey who launched into space on May 28, 1959. She and another monkey named Miss Baker were the first U.S. animals to successfully complete a mission to space. Independence Chamber President Lisa Wilson says there will be lots of fun activities at the Park and at Ralph Mitchell Zoo starting at 10am.

Wilson adds that all of Riverside Park's popular attractions will be open as well.

Activities begin at 10am near Monkey Island on Saturday.
