An inmate at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility dies in custody.

Authorities at the facility say 34-year-old inmate Tony Payne was found unresponsive in his cell last Thursday evening. Emergency medical services were called and staff immediately began life-saving measures. Payne was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Payne's death is under investigation by the Department of Corrections and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. His cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.
