USD 446 hears from the finalist candidates for the position on the Independence Recreation Commission at this month's meeting.
Four of the five candidates were present at the meeting, with the fifth providing a written statement to be read in her absence. One candidate, Jan Allison, says that sports are crucial to a child's development.
Another candidate for the position is Sam Carnes, who serves as vice principal and athletic director at Independence Middle School. Carnes says there is improvement to be made in area youth sports.
Also speaking to the board was Michael Rose, who is the coordinator of the Sparkwheel program at IMS. Rose says the emphasis needs to be on increasing involvement, specifically from young women.
The USD 446 Board will choose a representative at the June board meeting. Additional items of business was Rene Stanley being one of three Region 2 semifinalists for the Kansas Teacher of the Year award.
