A suspected bank robber is in custody in southwest Missouri.
Police arrested 28-year-old David Cox last week in connection to a bank robbery that occurred on Saturday, May 3. On that day, witnesses say a white male entered the Commerce Bank location on West 20th Street in Joplin and gave the teller a note demanding money. The man also told the teller that was armed with a handgun. The teller gave the man $200 in cash at which point the suspect stated: “This was a bad idea.” The suspect then fled the bank on foot.
A probable cause statement notes that, during the robbery, surveillance cameras were able to capture images of some very distinctive tattoos on the suspects hands, which allowed Joplin Police to identify the suspect as Cox. The detective who then phoned Cox says he admitted on the phone that he had robbed the bank and expressed that he felt it was an awful idea. Cox later turned himself in to the authorities.
He is currently being held in the Joplin City Jail and faces charges of 1st degree robbery and armed criminal action.
