May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and the Kansas Department of Transportation is encouraging all drivers to remain alert and share the road.
Motorcyclists make up a small number of vehicles on the roads but they account for nearly 10% of all fatal accidents. Preliminary data for Kansas shows 54 fatalities and more than 850 injury accidents involving motorcycles in 2024.
In an effort to reduce accidents, KDOT recommends that drivers and riders follow all traffic laws and obey the speed limit. Avoid drug and alcohol use while driving or riding and eliminate distractions and stay focused on the road.
Motorcyclists should wear highly visible protective gear, including a DOT-approved helmet. Riders should also have a valid motorcycle license.
