The Kansas Food Bank and the Community Access Center in Independence combine their efforts to ensure children in need have enough food to eat.
The Backpack food program provides school children with a package of food designed to make sure they have enough to eat over the weekend. The packages contain healthy, easy-to-prepare food for kid friendly meals. Volunteer Louis Ysusi says the program helps provide nutrition to our most vulnerable citizens.
The program assists more than 100 kids in Montgomery County based on family income and a referral based on a recognized need. The program comes through the Kansas Food Bank. Ysusi says the Food Bank relies on volunteers and donations.
