Kansas Senator Jerry Moran joins with his Congressional colleagues this week to honor an all-female World War II Battalion.
On Tuesday, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the members of the Women's Army Corps 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, also known as the Six-Triple-Eight. Family of those who served in the unit were on hand for the ceremony. Moran spoke at the ceremony and says the 850 women of the battalion were ready to do their duty when called upon.
The Six Triple Eight were called upon to sort and route mail for millions of American service members and civilians. Moran says their work was important to soldiers on the front lines.
The only two surviving members of the Six-Triple-Eight are Fannie McClendon and Anna Mae Robertson. Both are 104 years old and watched the ceremony from their respective homes. The battalion was the subject of a recent Netflix movie
