Dedication Ceremony Saturday for Member of One of Independence's Founding Families

On Saturday, there will be a dedication ceremony for the Mrs. Sarah Guernsey Memorial Plaque at the Abbey Mausoleum at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.

Guernsey and her husband George relocated to Independence in 1871, where she worked as a high school principal and served as President General of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and her husband were one of the early influential families in Independence. The Guernseys are well-known in Independence history for their feud with the family of A.C. Stich, which lasted for fifteen years and reportedly began between the two women of the families in Paris over the French pronunciation of the word “baggage.” One of the Guernseys' historic homes still stands on the east side of the intersection of Maple and Park.

Saturday’s ceremony begins at 1pm.
