Former Montgomery County Sheriff Bobby Dierks and former Coffeyville resident and social justice activist Bo Rupert file a formal complaint against the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
A joint statement released Friday by Dierks and Rupert, states that the pair has filed the complaint with the Kansas Commission of Peace Officers’ Standards and Training that alleges serious misconduct, failure to follow state law, and special treatment with in the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
The complaint stems from a domestic incident that occurred on May 1, 2021, involving a lieutenant in the Sheriff's Office. It goes on to explain that the lieutenant in question was allowed to avoid legal consequences in the case. Though the officer’s certification was eventually revoked, no formal charges were filed, and no arrest was made in the case.
The case also names current Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade, Undersheriff Chris Williams, and former Undersheriff Richard George.
Dierks stated that all law enforcement officers must follow the same law as the people they serve and the complaint calls for an independence investigation in to the matter.
Dierks served as Montgomery County Sheriff from January 2009 until January 2020. He was suspended from office in March 2019 after allegations emerged that he had attempted to persuade a deputy not to arrest his then-girlfriend for a DUI. He left office after a settlement was reached in the case.
