Independence To Receive Major Funding for Airport

The City of Independence announces it has received major grant funding from the State of Kansas for improvements at the City Airport.

The announcement came at last night's City Commission meeting. The City will receive more than $750,000 through the Kansas Airport Improvement Program or KAIP for rehabilitating the asphalt on the north apron at the Independence Municipal Airport. City Engineer John Garris says the grant will provide for repairs not covered by the Federal Aviation Administration.

As a part of the grant, the City of Independence will provide 10% in matching funds. Garris also updated the commission of recent work by city street crews. Garris says, they have been busy.

Garris says city crews have done more than 4 miles of crack sealing on city streets this year. Crews are set to finish that project next week with work on 6th Street between Main and Chestnut. That project may cause some traffic disruption, but weather permitting, it should be complete by the end of next week.
