The Cities of Caney, Howard, and Neodesha are set to receive state grant funding to help revitalize historic buildings in their downtown districts.
The grants were announced this week by the Kansas Department of Commerce through the Historic Economic Asset Lifeline or HEAL grants. Caney will receive $100,000 to refit the building at 219 West 4th Street. Howard is set to receive the same amount for their historic bank building, while Neodesha has been awarded $97,500 for the historic Brown Hotel.
The three communities are part of a total of 19 projects in rural areas across the state to receive the grants. The purpose of the HEAL grants is to encourage reinvestment and boost economic activity in smaller communities by helping transform vacant spaces in to locations for businesses, housing, childcare, the arts, and civic activities.
