Governor Urges Kansans to Vaccinate Kids for Measles

Governor Laura Kelly urges Kansas families to make sure their children are vaccinated for measles.

Governor Kelly held a press conference in Garden City yesterday (on Tuesday) to address the recent outbreak of the disease that began on March 13. Confirmed cases of measles in Kansas have been mostly confined to eight counties in southwest Kansas, but Kelly says vaccination rates in the state have recently fallen below 90%.

Kelly was joined at the press conference by Kansas Department of Health and Environment Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dereck Totten. Totten says vaccination is the best way to combat the outbreak.

The cases of measles confirmed in March were the first reported cases in the state since 2008.
