Sedgwick Co. Jail Bans Hot Pots After Deputy is Attacked

The Sedgwick County Jail prohibits inmates from using “hot pots” after a Sheriff's Deputy is attacked with boiling water.

On the evening of April 14, 20-year-old inmate James Edward Chavez obtained a pot of boiling water and threw it on a sheriff's deputy as the man was speaking to other inmates in the housing pod. The deputy was taken to a local hospital with second and third-degree burns on his back. He is expected to make a full recovery from the incident.

In response, inmate in the jail will no longer be allowed access to personal devices used for heating water. Inmates will still be able to obtain heated water from the water tap.
