The Missouri State Highway Patrol is called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Jasper County.
The incident occurred on April 13 when Jasper County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of a domestic dispute near the City of Jasper. When deputies arrived on the scene they found a man armed with a knife. The suspect was later identified as 43-year-old Gavin Newton of Joplin. When Newton was told to drop his weapon, he then charged at police. Deputies tased Newton to no effect. A deputy then fired his gun at Newton, striking him.
Newton was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his wounds on April 19. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave until the M-S-H-P investigation is complete.
