National Work Zone Awareness Week

This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week as road construction season begins across the country.

The purpose of the week is to raise awareness among drivers and to encourage them to use caution in construction zones in order to avoid accidents that can lead to injuries and fatalities. In Kansas during 2024, 508 people were injured and 8 people were killed in work zones across the state.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reminds drivers to stay alert and watch for workers when traveling through work zones, and to follow traffic controls in construction areas. This includes changing lanes when directed to do so and leaving ample space between your vehicle and the car in front of you. KDOT asks that drivers be patient and expect delays in work zones.

Everyone is encouraged to wear orange this week in support of Kansas highway workers, especially on Wednesday, when KDOT marks Go Orange Day, to raise awareness for the need for workzone safety.
