Fourth and fifth grade students at Guthridge School in Parsons enjoy a hands-on science lesson courtesy of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
The K-D-H-E Mobile Science Lab was in Parsons last week to teach students about DNA. During the visit, students mashed strawberries in an extraction solution to open cell walls and then watched as the DNA strand filtered out into the solution. They then learned about the structure of the DNA double helix.
The K-D-H-E Mobile Lab is an immersive, traveling experience available to Kansas students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Lab features hands-on activities taught by scientists with the aim of introducing students to public health. The purpose is to inspire future scientists in the fields of biology, animal sciences, genetics, chemistry, and environmental sciences.
