The Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita has a new baby.

 

On Monday, a female African elephant Xolani delivered a healthy male calf named Kijani. Zoo officials report that both mom and calf are doing well and are showing positive signs of bonding with each other.

 

Xolani, a first-time mother, is learning how to care for her new calf. The elephant care team is keeping a close watch while giving her the time and space necessary to gain confidence as a new mom.

 

The pair will not be available for viewing by the public until the calf is older.
