The City of Independence is officially celebrating National Public Safety Telecomminicators Week this week.
The week honors the 911 community for their dedication to the critical life-saving services they provide every day. Independence Police Department Dispatch and Records Supervisor Bridget Hammer says 9-1-1 dispatchers are the voice on the other end of the phone in the event of an emergency.
Hammer adds that Montgomery County has a committed staff of telecommunicators.
An official proclamation for the week was made by Independence Mayor Scott Smith at the city commission's most recent meeting. National Public Safety Telecomminicators Week was first recognized by Congress in 1991.
