Caney Bond Proposal Fails

Voters in the Caney USD 436 vote down a proposed $32 million bond issue for upgrades to all Caney Valley school facilities.

Unofficial results show 732 “No” votes and 134 “Yes” votes. The Montgomery County Clerk's Office stated that twelve provisional ballots will be counted Monday, and there is still a three day grace period for mail in ballots.

If passed, improvements would have included construction of a secured main entrance at Lincoln Memorial Elementary School and storm shelters at both the elementary and Junior and Senior High School, along with upgrades to the FACS room, chemistry and science rooms, and other specialized classrooms that have not been upgraded since the original construction in 1973.

Superintendent Blake Vargas says he is confident a plan will be achieved for district improvements in the near future.

Caney USD 436 will meet Monday evening in regular session to discuss the results of the election. The meeting begins at 6:00 in the Board of Education Office, 700 East Bullpup Boulevard in Caney.
