USD 436 voters head to the polls today to decide on a $32 million bond to improve all Caney Valley school facilities.
The list of improvements include construction of a secured main entrance at Lincoln Memorial Elementary School and modifications to the existing gymnasium to incorporate a storm shelter and cafeteria. It also inlcudes large-scale upgrades at the Caney Valley Junior and Senior High School campus including room reconfigurations and construction of new boys’ and girls’ locker rooms that will also serve as a storm shelter. Improvements are also scheduled for the FACS room, chemistry and science rooms, and other specialized classrooms that have not been upgraded since the original construction in 1973.
The plan also calls for the relocation of the football, baseball, and softball fields to on campus at the high school. Relocation of the football stadium would address a multitude of ADA accessibility issues that confront the football stadium constructed in 1938.
According to financial consulting group Raymond James, the proposed bond election would raise USD 436’s tax rate by an additional 12 mills. That means a home with an appraised value of $100,000 would generate an additional $145 per year in taxes, or $12.10 per month.
Polls open today at 7:00 a.m. And close at 7:00 p.m. at USD 436 normal polling locations.
