The Independence City Commission approves a pair of measures aimed at improving the city's water infrastructure.
At last night's meeting, commissioners gave the go-ahead to spend $47,000 to allow the engineering firm of Evans, Bierly, Hutchison & Associates to develop a long-term water supply plan. The plan would identify priority locations in the city for water line replacement and identify areas that are most prone to leaks. The plan would be implemented over the course of the next ten years. Mayor Scott Smith says, when it comes to such a big project, a good plan is needed.
Commissioners also approved $158,000 for Water Resource Solutions for the design and permitting of a diversion structure for the inspection of the City Dam. City Engineer John Garris says it's been more than 40 years since the dam was last repaired and that this is just the first step in the process.
In other business, Independence joined other area cities in proclaiming April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The next Independence City Commission meeting will be on April 10th.
